Valerie Jeffs Mackert Gateway to Freedom - A Non Profit Assisting Victims of Domestic Violence and Polygamy

In Loving Memory of Valerie Jeffs Mackert

Valerie was a beautiful young girl with a smile that could light up any room. She was also Warren Jeffs sister; and sexually abused as a child by three different brothers, including Warren.

When she left the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was unable to adapt to the outside world.

This struggle to fit in, to belong in either world, eventually cost her life.

Valerie represents how difficult this transitional struggle can be. We have seen first hand what can happen when individuals do not get the help needed to make this drastic life change. Given the assistance they need, refugees can become productive citizens of our great Nation.                                                                                Valerie Jeffs Mackert

3. Victim assistance; working in conjunction with existing organizations to provide:

  • Personal documentation assistance and social services liaison. Continuing education, tutoring support and referral services.
  • Therapy and recovery services and support networking. Provide medical, dental and optical services, through cooperation from existing Trade Schools, and Universities, for victims who often suffer neglect in these crucial areas; often providing life changing, life saving care.
  • Transitional aide through personalized housing, beyond that provided by shelters, to include providing childcare, as needed.

Maintaining power and control in domestic violence, or within a polygamist cult is accomplished using the same dynamics; in fact they are identical. This diagram clearly demonstrates the similarities between domestic violence and polygamist cults.

Not only are the dynamics the same; the individual needs when leaving such controlled environments are the same, to varying degrees. Our foundation addresses these needs; beyond what the normal domestic violence shelter, or welfare system provides.

Studies, and personal experiences have shown that women who leave polygamy are frequently drawn to unhealthy relationships that can often become violent.

      Identifying Adults Abused As Children
(The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress)

The effects of early sexual abuse last well into adulthood, affecting relationships, work, family, and life in general. Individual symptomatology tends to fall into four areas:

      1. Damaged goods: Low self-esteem, depression, self-destructiveness (suicide and self-mutilation), guilt, shame, self-blame, constant search for approval and nurturance.

      2. Betrayal: Impaired ability to trust, blurred boundaries and role confusion, rage and grief, difficulty forming relationships.

      3. Helplessness: Anxiety, fear, tendency towards re-victimization, panic attacks.

      4. Isolation: Sense of being different, stigmatized, lack of supports, poor peer relations.

It is our goal to assist women and children who want to rebuild their lives; freeing themselves and their children from the cycle of abuse.

Our plan meets all of the anticipated needs of these individuals, and is intended to work with other organizations that would provide the first step in crisis intervention, and stabilization. Some of these organizations are:

      • Tapestry Against Polygamy
      • The Diversity Foundation (The Lost Boys)
      • The HOPE Organization
      • Stop Polygamy in Canada
      • Domestic Violence Shelters and Organizations
      • Victims Advocate Groups

Best of all, with your help our plan, deflects them from a taxed Welfare system that may only temporarily provide them with some monies and an existence.  They will quickly become self-sufficient, gaining the confidence they need to rebuild their lives; becoming productive members of society.

We seek to enlighten the general public as to the reality of the on-going abuses and sexual crimes that are considered "normal" within the FLDS.

When looking at this photo it is important to note that The FLDS continue to teach that a marriage is not ratified in the heavens  until it is consummated.
